Loving Goats (2 Courses)

We love our goaties! But there is a lot to know to be a great goat parent! Here at Fort Fluff and Furr we perform all routine care, limited emergency care, and even assist with deliveries! Goat vetting can be a difficult thing to find in a pinch. So, it is critical to be educated and prepared for many possibilities. Also, as an active participant on several goat boards, we have not only first-hand knowledge from our goats but also exposure and experience to goat care in numerous situations.  The key to raising goats is being part of a community of responsible goat owners with experience.

Intro to Goats (1 hour)

Thinking of adding goats to your backyard? Maybe just want to know more? This visit is for anyone desiring general knowledge on goats and is a requirement for anyone considering Growing with Goats.  This visit will provide general information on the different purposes and breeds of goats, general care, and costs. Goats are a significant investment of time and money when well cared for. This visit is HIGHLY encouraged for anyone considering goatS (there is a reason that s is in bold and capitalized!)

Will my goat eat trash or mow my yard? Dairy, meat, pet? Registered/Unregistered? Certified/Uncertified? I can just have one, can’t I? Should I neuter my goat? What type of vet care is needed? How long do they live? What do they eat? How much do they cost? Do they prefer hot/cold weather? How much time do I have to spend with them? What is goat bloat and why does it matter?

These are just a few of the questions you will know the answer to at the end of this visit.

Growing with Goats (2 hours; Pre-requisite: Intro to Goats)

So, you’ve completed Intro to Goats and still are thinking or planning on adopting goatS!  This visit will build on the information from your visit for Intro to Goats and cover in depth the responsibilities of raising health, happy goats.

This information is key to raising healthy, happy goats from kid to senior (including mating, pregnancy, and birthing), thru changing weather of the seasons, and in a variety of environments while also providing pros/cons for cost and time related to care.

This is a hands on experience where you will hold, examine, and participate in care of goats. Discussions and demonstrations will: allow for further exploration of breeds to identify best fits based on your specific farm goals and assist with locating breeders; seasonal feed and nutrition requirements; feed and water systems (custom and manufactured options, storage, and purchasing); barn/shelter building, care, and winterization; diseases, prevention, medical care and emergency preparedness; hoof, horn, and teeth care; and more.
